Quick & Simple Mid-Year Goal Review

Research has shown us time and time again that those who write down their goals and refer to them are more likely to hit them. That makes sense.

And there are ways to optimize this goal setting & achievement process, so that it’s not a goal set at the beginning of the year that falls by the wayside after 3 weeks.

So let’s get into it:

1) Modify your goals as needed

Look at the goals you set at the beginning of the year and ask yourself if they still fit where you want to go. Reflect on the progress made, time/energy spent on them. If no progress has been made, does this goal need to be broken down to feel less overwhelming and more doable? Or perhaps it seems too easy that it was put on the back burner to be returned to later, and still, no progress has been made, so maybe a modification needs to be made to feel stretched and challenged.

2) Create goals that EXCITE you

Research has shown us that we are most likely to achieve goals that we’ve created for ourselves, vs. goals that other’s have created for us or goals we think we ‘should’ accomplish. Having these intrinsic goals naturally EXCITE us, and create natural motivation to work towards them. They are literally goals that ‘pull’ us towards them, vs us feeling like we need that ‘push’ to get working towards them. Take a moment to look at your goals. Do they excite you? If not, how can you modify them so that they ARE exciting for you?

3) Get clear on WHY you want it

This expands on the above step. There is a reason something excites us, so getting clear on the WHY will create a touchstone to return to if/when you get off track (because life happens), and will keep you going over obstacles, bumpy roads, etc. Why is this goal important to you? How will it serve you/your life for the better? Who else does this goal serve by you achieving it? And what are the consequences of not achieving this goal?

4) Ask Who you need to be to attain this goal

People who have the things you want/desire to achieve & create have an identity that has helped them do/have those goals. They have a certain set of beliefs, behaviors, way of being/doing things that has helped them get to where they are/achieve what they’ve achieved. So when it comes to our own goals, it’s essential to ask ourselves this question: “Who do I have to be to attain that goal” because here’s something to ponder: if you were already that person, you most likely would have it already.

As we work towards any goal, we end up becoming the person who has it in the process, and we become that person by deliberately working on it.

So for the goal you’re review, ask yourself, “Thinking of the person/version of me who has this goal:

  • How do they think, behave, show up?

  • What do they believe?

  • How do they care for themselves, talk to themselves?

  • What do they put up with and what is a non-negotiable.

  • How do they protect/manage their time, energy, resources?

  • How can I start showing up/becoming that version of myself today? (and asking yourself this everyday)

Once you’ve completed the above steps, here’s the icing on the cake:

5) Write your goals down in present tense, as if they’ve already happened.

This is a technique that starts to tell your subconscious mind, which is in charge of up to 90% of your daily actions via habits and automatic action, what to now make automatic: the direction towards your goals.

Write each goal on an index card in the present tense, as if it’s already done, and keep these note cards with/around you (your wallet, nightstand, desk, on the fridge, etc).

*Bonus: read/review them before you go to bed at night and first thing in the morning.

**Double bonus: speak them out loud to yourself.

Going through this simple goal creation & review process regularly (ie every 1-6 months, whatever feels best for you) will help keep you on track with your goals & bring about ideas, intuitive hits and nudges…follow these in the form of inspired action, and see where you are in 6 months :-)

Now I’d love to hear from you! I’d love to hear what your goals are for the 2nd half of the year.
