Oh Shakeology. 

You may have heard of it. You may have tried it. You may know it as the ‘overpriced protein’. 

I’ve thought all three, and yet, here I am, 5 years later, loving it and doting on it . 

I first became a Beachbody coach in October of 2015. When I signed up for my first program, which was 21 day fix, this supplement was offered with a ‘try it and if you don’t like it, return the empty bag and get your money back’ sorta message. 

I was hesitant. For the price and not being much of a supplements girl, I really just wanted the workout and ability to coach others in the fitness arena. 

But as I looked a little more into it (I mean, that offer…I could try it for at least a week and if I didn’t like it, could always return it, right?), I saw that it was more than just a protein supplement. It contained superfoods, antioxidants, prebiotics and probiotics for gut health, and adaptogens to help with stress (yes please!). 

I was intrigued. 

So I ordered my first 30 day supply, which was the whey chocolate/vanilla/strawberry. Yum. 

Fast forward, I drank it pretty regularly for about 2 years and loved it. But as what happens when you get used to something and start taking it for granted, I wondered if I could skip it and use other supplements. So for the next 3 years, I sought out other formulas and tried to purchase some of the ingredients separately to see if I could do it better.  I couldn’t. 

This may not always be the case and I will always keep a curious mind and eye open to see what’s out there to optimize my health. For now, it’s this brilliant superfood smoothie that packs a nutritional punch. I’m so grateful for it. 

And the price is at least a good 1/4 of what it costs trying to buy everything separately. I tried and stop because it was getting a bit out of hand. 

How I use it:  

When I first started drinking this superfood shake, I would shake it up with some almond milk or water as I was leaving for work to head home and work out (chocolate was my fave). It was a great snack! 

But now, I get my workout in first thing in the morning more often than not because that’s how I love to start my day, and Shakeology has been a great, quick breakfast and way to fuel after my workout, so I’ve been blending it as apart of my breakfast smoothie (one of my fave recipe’s is here). It’s so filling and keeps me full for about 2-4 hours. 

If I decide to have something else for Breakfast, I may skip my Shakeology for the day or my get it in as an afternoon snack later in the day, just depending on how I feel when I tune into what my body is wanting (I’ve learned to always listen to my gut and learn to tune into my bod to tell me what it wants and needs).

That one of the reasons we tend to overeat/gain weight is because of the lack of nutrients in our diet. Basically our body isn’t getting the nutrients it wants/needs to help us thrive, so it turns on the hunger signal to try to get those nutrients, but if we put less than nutritious stuff in our tank, the cycle continues. 

One of the things I’ve noticed after drinking Shakeology for 2 months is that my hunger felt more controlled and I felt like I could enjoy foods in moderation. I never like to deprive myself of anything I want, or call something a ‘treat’ because I’m not a dog… but I do like having a few bits of something and feeling like “that was yummy” then moving on with my life (I used to obsess over sweets and croissants). And I’m pretty darn sure this new behavior of my, of not obsessing so much, has a lot to do with the nutrition Shakeology fuels my body with. 

So what now?

Here’s what I think: There’s so much health and nutrition information out there to make anyone’s head spin. I’ve felt it myself, and I have bachelors in exercise science and have taken high level nutrition courses and MY head still spins trying to figure it out. 

So much so that I threw my hands up in the air one day and said ‘Eff it! I’m doing what feels good for my body in the long run’. 

That takes courage and patience. Because I didn’t mean taste good in the moment (although that works), but what makes me feel good 4, 12, 24 hours after consuming it. I decided to become my own expert through experimenting with differing things and listening to my body. 

And that’s what I recommend for you. Become your own expert. Do a bit of research, look at reviews, and try things out if you feel it’s the best thing for you.
